A reminder that Geosciences email service will be discontinued Aug 3 2009.
Before this date you need to disable email forwarding from your psu.edu
account to the geosc.psu.edu account. This can be accomplished via
https://www.work.psu.edu . If you don't do this, you may lose email
delivered after Aug 3 (three days from now).
If you prefer to read email from a service other than PSU, you can arrange
this through the https://www.work.psu.edu web site.
We encourage you to switch early. When you are ready to make the change,
send us an email (support@geosc.psu.edu) indicating that you have disabled
forwarding to Geosciences. Please include your Penn State username
(xyz123).
To ease the transition, we will keep the Geosciences POP, IMAP and
webmail servers running until Aug 10. You will still be able to retrieve
mail stored on these systems.
NO NEW MAIL WILL BE DELIVERED AFTER AUG 3.
Also, Penn State filters spam differently than EMS. The EMS system
removed email identified as spam. Penn State identifies and marks spam
email, but does not remove it. Spam email will have a new header
inserted:
X-PSU-Spam-Flag: YES
Your email program can use this header to filter spam email to a junk
folder automatically. Check the filtering options for your particular
program to accomplish this. Additional information about Penn State spam
filtering can be found here:
http://aset.its.psu.edu/announcements/spamfilter_update_new.html
If you need help reconfiguring your email program to work with the Penn
State servers please let us know.

Subject: Discontinuation of Geosciences email service: Mon Aug 3 2009
Folks,
For a variety of reasons we have decided to discontinue department email
service. The existence of many alternatives, including free POP and
IMAP email from the University, played a significant role in this decision.
Effective Monday August 3, 2009 IMAP, POP, Webmail and SMTP service via
email.geosc.psu.edu, smtp.geosc.psu.edu, and webmail.geosc.psu.edu will be
discontinued. To prepare for this change and to ensure no email is
lost, please read this letter completely.
If you have any questions about transitioning to a new email service
please contact us (help@geosc.psu.edu).

I. EMAIL FORWARDING
Email to your geosc.psu.edu address will be automatically forwarded for 3
years to your University (psu.edu) address. On August 3 we will force this
forward for all geosc.psu.edu accounts with a corresponding psu.edu address.
If you do not have a psu.edu address, please contact us (help@geosc.psu.edu)
immediately so other arrangements can be made. Do not wait until August to
make these changes or you may lose email.
If you would like to begin using University email prior to August 3, please
complete the steps in this section and then contact us (help@geosc.psu.edu)
so we can begin your forwarding early.
BEFORE AUG 3:
- Log into https://www.work.psu.edu with your University name and password (example username: xyz123).
- Click on the link at the bottom center of the page, "Change your e-mail forwarding address".
- Enter your University email address, per the examples on the page, and click the button "Change". This will disable forwarding of University email to Geosciences email. Doing this will prevent lost email.
If you would prefer to forward email to a non-Geosciences system such
as Google, Yahoo!, or Hotmail, you may enter that address in place of
your University email address. This address must not contain
"geosc.psu.edu" to the right of the "@" symbol!
When you have completed the above steps, please inform us by email to
help@geosc.psu.edu . We will enable forwarding of your Geosciences
email to your University email. This forward will remain in place for
3 years, to Aug 3, 2012.
II. WEBMAIL
The University provides a webmail service at https://webmail.psu.edu .
The University provides 1 GB of storage space to webmail users.
III. IMAP
The University provides IMAP service at no charge. A separate
application is required to receive IMAP service, however. The
application takes 1 business day to process. To enroll in the IMAP
service visit: https://www.work.psu.edu/access/email .
The University provides 1 GB of storage space for the IMAP INBOX and
1 GB of storage space for other IMAP mailboxes.
Geosciences IMAP users can move server copies of folders to the
University server. To accomplish this, configure the University email
account in your client and drag folders from the Geosciences account
to the University account.
Note: The IMAP service stores email separately from the Webmail
service. If you enroll in the IMAP service Webmail may not be fully
functional. See the warnings on the enrollment page above.
The IMAP server is email.psu.edu .
TLS or SSL is required.
IV. POP
The University provides POP service at no charge. You may only check
for new mail every 2 minutes. More frequent checks will be rejected.
The POP server is email.psu.edu .
TLS or SSL is required.
V. SMTP
A machine connected to the PSU network (on-campus, by VPN, or dial-up
networking) can send email through smtp.psu.edu .
Machines off-campus without VPN or dial-up networking access can use
the "POP before SMTP" or "Authenticated SMTP" facilities to send email.
"POP before SMTP": If you use POP to receive email, check for new
mail before sending email. This will authorize your computer for a
short time to send email through smtp.psu.edu from any location on the
Internet. This may not work for IMAP users.
"Authenticated SMTP": POP or IMAP users can configure their email
programs to use the authenticated SMTP server, authsmtp.psu.edu. This
server will work from anywhere on the Internet, including on-campus.
If you read email on a laptop this is the recommended solution.
Configuration details for "Authenticated SMTP" are on this page:
http://kb.its.psu.edu/psu-all/hd/authsmtpconfig
VI. AUTO-REPLY, VACATION MESSAGES
Auto-reply and vacation messages can be configured via the
https://www.work.psu.edu website.
- Log into https://www.work.psu.edu
- Click the link at the bottom center of the page, "Start/Stop Vacation Auto-Reply"
- Follow the instructions to start or stop the auto-reply.
VII. EMAIL ALIASES
Each University email account may have 3 unique alias addresses. To
set these addresses:
- Log into https://www.work.psu.edu
- Click the link at the bottom center of the page, "Add/Change Other Directory Information"
- Enter alias names into the fields "Alternate E-mail ID", "Secondary E-mail ID", or "Third E-mail ID".
- Click the button at the bottom of the page, "Save Changes"
Note: Aliases are not fully qualified addresses -- if you want the
address "rockfan@psu.edu" enter the alias as "rockfan".
Note: Aliases must be unique across the University. Common aliases
may already be in use.
Note: Aliases aren't used to authenticate to systems. You will
continue to login with your University id, e.g., xyz123.
VIII. GETTING HELP
The University knowledge base includes answers to many common
problems. http://kb.its.psu.edu
If you don't find an answer in the knowledge base, we are still
your first point of contact for problems with email. While this
change to services will limit the types of problems we can solve,
we can provide advice and direction for most problems. Contact
us at help@geosc.psu.edu .
The University help desk can provide support for problems with
passwords, account issues, and off-hour support. The help desk can
be contacted by email: helpdesk@psu.edu; telephone: 814-863-1035 .
