Biogeochemistry [website]
The Biogeochemical Research Initiative for Education (BRIE) is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary educational initiative in biogeochemistry. It is supported by Penn State and by the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) program. As an IGERT program, it is charged with bringing about changes in graduate education for students, faculty, and institutions by establishing an innovative new model for graduate education and training that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Paleobiology [website]
The Department of Geosciences offers a diverse program in paleobiology leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Faculty and students address a wide range of questions that center on the evolution of life on Earth and the interaction of organisms with their environment over geologic time. Faculty expertise includes invertebrate paleontology, vertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology, and paleobotany and covers nearly all subdisciplines of paleobiology including astrobiology, geobiology, isotopic biogochemistry, organic geochemistry, stratigraphic paleobiology, evolutionary paleoecology, quantitative paleobiology, macroevolution, biostratigraphy, and evolutionary genomics.
Astrobiology [website]
The Penn State Astrobiology Research Center was created in 1998 as one of eleven member institutions of the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI). Its primary missions are to promote, conduct, and lead integrated multidisciplinary research, to train scientists, and to provide public access to the new field of astrobiology.
