Robert F. Schmalz Award in the Department of
Geosciences
Purpose: To
honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an undergraduate
student who is enrolled in the Department of Geosciences
in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and who
demonstrates excellence in the classroom or in his or
her research.
Who is eligible? All undergraduates
enrolled in the Department of Geosciences who demonstrate
excellence in the classroom and in their research. Award
can be received only once per recipient. Code: SCHMZ

Scholarship in Geosciences
Purpose: To provide
recognition and financial assistance to outstanding
students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Geosciences
Department of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? All full-time undergraduate
students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Geosciences
Department who have achieved superior academic records
or who manifest a promise of outstanding academic success.
Each scholarship shall be awarded for one academic year
and may be renewed for subsequent years providing the
recipient continues to meet the conditions of eligibility

Joseph Berg Award for Undergraduate
Research in Geosciences
Purpose:
To honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an
undergraduate student who is enrolled in the Department
of Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
This award is meant to encourage students to continue
doing research in the laboratories of the Department
of Geosciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this award shall be given to all undergraduate students
enrolled in the Department of Geosciences in the College
of Earth and Mineral Sciences who have participated
in on-going undergraduate student research in the laboratories
of the Department of Geosciences. Each award shall be
for one academic year. Further extraordinary accomplishments
by a recipient may enable that recipient to be again

Scholarship from the Ronald A. Landon Endowment
in Hydrogeology
Purpose:
To provide monies for scholarships and merit awards
in the Department of Geosciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration shall
be given to students entering their senior year of undergraduate
study enrolled in the Department of Geosciences and
majoring in hydrogeology, or majoring in earth sciences
with an emphasis in environmental programs who have
a minimum grade point average of 2.80. A preference
shall be given to those students who have a proven need
for financial assistance to meet required college expenses
and with the highest overall GPA at the end of the junior
year. Each scholarship shall be awarded for the duration
of one academic year and shall not be renewed. A recipient
will not be eligible to receive the award a second time.

Barton P. Cahir Award
Endowment in Earth and Mineral Sciences
Purpose:
To honor and recognize the highest grade point average
by an undergraduate transfer student enrolled in the
Geosciences Department or in the engineering-based disciplines
in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? Full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the Geosciences Department or in
the engineering disciplines within the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences. Eligible students must have transferred
to the University Park campus from either a Commonwealth
Educational System campus or from another university.
Determination will be based upon at least one year’s
performance at the University Park campus, and no student
with a GPA under 3.00 will be considered. Each award
shall be for one academic year. Continued academic performance
of the first rank by a recipient may enable that recipient
to be again considered for this award. Code: CAHIB
Scholarship from the
Arthur P. Honess Memorial Fund
Purpose: To
honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an undergraduate
student who is enrolled in the Department of Geosciences
in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and who
demonstrates financial need.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this award shall be given to all undergraduate students
enrolled in the Geosciences Department with a major
in Geosciences and shall meet the following criteria:
1. Have completed 4 semesters of study
2. Have participated in extra-curricular University
activities, especially those of a cultural nature.
3. Have demonstrated academic excellence in mineralogical
and related subjects
4. Have a need for financial assistance.
In the event that a suitable recipient majoring in Geosciences
is not available, a graduate or undergraduate student
in mineralogy or related fields who meets all other
criteria may be considered to be eligible. The award
shall be made for one academic year and is not renewable.

Benjamin F. Howell, Jr.
Award in Geosciences
Purpose:
To honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an
undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled in
the Department of Geosciences in the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this award shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled in the Department of
Geosciences who have demonstrated outstanding achievement.
First preference shall be given to students studying
or whose area of specialty lies in the fields of Geophysics.
Each award shall be for one academic year. Further extraordinary
accomplishments by a recipient may enable that recipient

Frank Dachille Memorial
Award in Geochemistry
Purpose:
To honor and recognize outstanding achievement by a
full-time graduate or undergraduate student enrolled
in the Geosciences Department of the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? All full-time undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled in the Geosciences Department
and studying geochemistry, with a preference given for
those studying the geochemistry of the solar system.
The recipients will have achieved superior academic
records and have exhibited some exemplary achievement.
Each award shall be made for one academic year. Further
extraordinary accomplishments by a recipient may enable
that recipient to be again considered for this award.

David P. “Duff” Gold Undergraduate
Scholarship Fund in Geosciences
Purpose:
To provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding
undergraduate students enrolled in or planning to enroll
in the Department of Geosciences in the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Department
of Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest
promise of outstanding academic success. Each scholarship
shall be awarded for one academic year and shall be
renewed for subsequent years providing the recipient

Kappmeyer-Isaacs Field
Camp Award
Purpose:
To provide funds for outstanding undergraduate students'
summer field camp registration fees.
Who is eligible? All undergraduates
enrolled in the Department of Geosciences who demonstrate
excellence in the classroom and who are registered for
GEOSC 472/Summer Field Camp. Award can be received only

Thomas F. Bates Undergraduate
Research Enhancement Fund for Geosciences
in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
Purpose:
The purpose of this endowment shall be to improve the
quality of undergraduate education in the College of
Earth and Mineral Sciences by providing monies to support
undergraduate research activities in the geosciences
with emphasis, as appropriate, in the areas of mineralogy
and geochemistry. It is important for undergraduates
to become involved in research. Conceiving a project,
planning it, budgeting it, executing it, drawing conclusions
and presenting the results for critical analysis to
one’s peers represent important aspects of science
education. Expenditures may include equipment charges,
cost of field and laboratory supplies, cost of field
work, to help support research activities in conjunction
with field trips or field courses, the costs of attending
professional meetings related to the student’s
research activities or the costs for visiting other
research facilities which are related to the student’s
research.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the Department of Geosciences in
the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences who are actively
involved in undergraduate research activities such as
senior theses, field camp, and research projects in

Research Endowment in Geosciences
Purpose:
To enhance the undergraduate programs in the Department
of Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the Department of Geosciences in
the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences who are actively
involved in undergraduate research activities such as
senior theses, field camp, and research projects in

Field Camp Endowment
Purpose:
To enrich the geologic knowledge and experiences of
undergraduate students in the Department of Geosciences
in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences by providing
financial support for expenses associated with geologic
field studies during the annual Geosciences summer field
camp.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
students enrolled in the Department of
Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
who are actively involved in field studies activities
such as field camp. Preference will be given to students
who demonstrate academic merit and meet departmental

Edwin L. Drake Memorial
Scholarships
Purpose:
To provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding
students enrolled or planning to enroll in the College
of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled in the College of Earth
and Mineral Sciences who possess a desire to study geology,
mineralogy, or Petroleum Engineering and who demonstrate

Scholarship from the
Earle S. Lenker Fund for Field Studies in Geology
Purpose:
To enrich the geologic knowledge and experiences of
undergraduate and graduate students in Geosciences or
Earth Science in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
Monies will be provided for expenses associated with
geology field studies, attending specialized field courses
or field trip opportunities.
Who is eligible? Consideration for
this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled in the Department of
Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
who are actively involved in field studies activities
