PSU ICE and CLIMATE GROUP

CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

Ice Core Climate Studies-
Tropical Ice Core Climate Studies- Elemental and isotopic composition of trapped gases in the Huascaran and Sajama ice cores from South America.
Polar Climate Studies- Paleoatmospheric records of the isotopic composition of methane and nitrous oxide; 200,000 year record of atmospheric [N2O] from the GISP II ice core

Ice Sheet Modeling-
Using numerical models to study a variety of topics such as ice-water-sediment coupling, glacier erosion, and ice shelf stability.

Properties of Ice
Development and use of techniques in the measurement of optical and physical properties of ice for annual-layer dating, melt-layer thermometry, and ice flow studies.

The Big Picture Show
Sea-level change; preserving climate-change records; sedimentation and biogeochemical cycles; etc...

Remote Sensing of Ice and Snow
Extraterrestrial Dust

Firn Densification

ANUBiS-
The goal of the Antarctic Network of Unattended Broadband Seismometers Project is to deploy a network of a dozen seismometers that will record continuously. Half the stations will be at existing AGO sites in East Antarctica and half will be at standalone miniAGO sites in West Antarctica. These data will fill a huge lacuna in the global seismic dataset and provide valuable new information about the Antarctic crust and mantle structure.
