The Anubis Mascot
The eagle-eyed will have noted that we use the GNU/Linux penguin as
our mascot. There are two reasons for this.
- The philosophy of the Open Source movement is that all
information should be freely shared and exchanged. This does
not mean that one loses control or credit for one's work, but
that you don't prevent others from building on your work. This
is, of course, the basic philosophy of scientific research as
well.
- I use the GNU/Linux OS for the embedded computer in each
Anubis station. I use GNU/Linux in the field-laptops that are
used for installation and monitoring of the Anubis stations.
I use GNU/Linux in my workstation in the lab as a file server
and number cruncher.
- Finally, the fact that the Linux logo is a penguin was the
clincher for this Antarctic project.
For what it is worth, the source code for the Anubis software,
the schematics and PCB layouts for the power system, and the
specifications for the hardware are all freely available under
the GPL.
